Speech Pathologist

Speech Pathologists are trained health professionals who study, diagnose, and treat individuals with a wide range of different communication disorders. These difficulties may include speech, language, social skills, reading, writing, listening, stuttering, voice and/or swallowing disorders. Holistic and outcome driven speech therapy interventions aim to enhance individuals’ communication skills, and therefore, their overall quality of life: Good communication is a basic human right and fundamental to achieving a fulfilling and successful life.

  1. Assessment and Diagnosis:
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate the client's speech, language, communication, and swallowing abilities.
    • Determine the nature and severity of any speech or language disorders or swallowing difficulties.
  2. Treatment Planning:
    • Collaborate with the client and their support network to develop personalised treatment plans based on their goals and needs.
    • Consider the NDIS goals and support categories while creating the therapy plan.
  3. Speech and Language Therapy:
    • Provide individual or group therapy sessions to address speech sound production, language comprehension, expression, and pragmatics (social communication skills).
    • Use evidence-based techniques and strategies to facilitate speech and language development and improve overall communication abilities.
  4. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC):
    • Evaluate, select, and implement AAC systems or devices to assist individuals with severe communication impairments.
    • Train clients and their support network on how to effectively use AAC systems and strategies.
  5. Swallowing and Feeding Therapy:
    • Assess and treat swallowing and feeding difficulties, such as dysphagia, oral motor dysfunction, or sensory-based feeding disorders.
    • Develop individualised strategies to improve swallowing safety, oral motor skills, and mealtime behaviours.
  6. Assistive Technology:
    • Identify and recommend appropriate assistive technology devices or applications to support communication and participation.
    • Provide training and support for the use of assistive technology in daily life and educational or work settings.
  7. Parent/Caregiver Education and Support:
    • Educate parents, caregivers, and support workers on effective communication strategies and techniques to facilitate progress outside of therapy sessions.
    • Provide guidance and resources for creating a supportive communication environment at home or in the community.
  8. Collaboration and Advocacy:
    • Collaborate with other professionals involved in the client's care, such as doctors, teachers, occupational therapists, or psychologists.
    • Advocate for the client's needs, ensuring appropriate supports and resources are available through the NDIS.
  9. Progress Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Regularly assess and review the client's progress towards their communication goals.
    • Modify treatment plans as needed and provide feedback to the client and their support network.
  10. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and any necessary reports.
    • Provide necessary documentation to support the client's eligibility for NDIS funding and ongoing therapy services.
  11. Referrals and Recommendations:
    • Identify additional services or specialists that may be beneficial to the client's communication needs and overall well-being.
    • Make referrals and recommendations for further assessments, therapies, or supports.
